ROOM TO FEEL AT HOME

Where to stay
in Orlando.

Villas, Disney hotels, resorts and the locations that work for different kinds of holiday.

Where we have stayed

Over the years we have stayed in Davenport, Clermont, Kissimmee, Disney hotels and the Celebration Hotel. For a first family holiday, our usual recommendation is Kissimmee, particularly around Four Corners. There are lots of villas and resorts, US-192 has shops and restaurants close by, and many properties are convenient for Walt Disney World.

Villa, hotel or resort?

We prefer a villa for most of a longer trip. You gain bedrooms, a kitchen, private laundry, room to spread out and often a private pool or games room. The trade-off is transport: you will normally need a car, Uber or Lyft. A Disney hotel is expensive, even at value level, but staying inside the Disney bubble can feel genuinely special. Our favourite compromise is a villa holiday with a few Disney hotel nights added.

Best of bothUse a villa as your comfortable base, then add two or three Disney hotel nights for the transport, atmosphere and resort experience.

Disney stays we know

We have stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge in a savannah-view room and two-bedroom villa, Grand Floridian Villas, Beach Club Villas, Yacht Club, Art of Animation, the Cabins at Fort Wilderness and Coronado Springs. Yacht Club is a family favourite, while Beach Club and Yacht Club make EPCOT and Hollywood Studios wonderfully convenient. Fort Wilderness feels like a holiday inside the holiday, especially with a golf cart.

Universal and Celebration

We have not personally stayed at a Universal hotel, but selected higher-category hotels include useful theme-park benefits, so compare the total rather than the room alone. Celebration Hotel is lovely for an anniversary or romantic couple of nights because Celebration is walkable and relaxed, but we would not normally choose it as the base for an entire family holiday.

Our villa checklist

  • Choose the location around the parks you will visit most.
  • Check genuine driving times, not only map distance.
  • Decide how many real bedrooms and bathrooms the group needs.
  • Confirm whether pool heating costs extra. We recommend it from late October into early May.
  • Read reviews across several websites and reverse-search listing photographs.
  • Compare platform pricing with the owner’s legitimate direct website.
  • Check gated-community, parking, visitor and quiet-hour rules.
  • Photograph existing damage on arrival and report it immediately.
  • Ask about late checkout before the end of the holiday.

One of our slightly silly rules is that if every television in the photographs looks ancient, the rest of the property may not have been updated either.

Locations for different trips

Disney-focused: Kissimmee villas, Disney hotels or qualifying partner hotels. Universal-focused: Universal property, International Drive or a well-connected location such as Storey Lake. Without a car: stay close to the parks you will use and compare hotel shuttles carefully. Long stays: a villa feels like a home and owners may offer extended-stay discounts. A quieter trip: Clermont, Davenport away from the busiest corridors, Celebration or a peaceful gated community can suit slower holidays.

Areas requiring extra thought

Reunion Resort is beautiful, but leaving the resort can take longer than the map suggests, so it suits a villa-and-pool holiday better than constant park hopping. We would also be cautious about accommodation immediately around Old Town and would check the exact street, recent reviews and security arrangements before booking.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not arrive without the door code, full address and owner’s contact details saved offline. Confirm cleaning charges, deposits and checkout instructions before paying. Never send a large direct payment until you have verified the owner, property and payment protection. For Disney villas, legitimate DVC rental services can sometimes provide strong value, but read cancellation terms closely.
